A great Day for Pi

Hello all, I know this is a few weeks late. But so is the good weather we should be having everyday right? I figured since my last few entries started with a mention of the local climate, why stop now? On this particular day, we got our first reprieve from the bad weather so I decided to use it as a good reason to leave the house early and watch some great live music in my neighborhood.

Unfortunately, not early enough because I had missed the first act in the Astoria Music Collective's Pi day Folk Festival. Which was none other than the lovely Sara No h. Luckily I was able to capture a few pictures of her gracing the stage, as she was the host of the day's festivities. I have seen Sara perform as some of the other Astoria Music Collective (AMC) events such as open mics, and the performances she has posted online. If you haven't heard her music, just "Wait and See", which you won't have to do for long, because that is the name of her new single and I included the link for you above (you're welcome). If you happened to be seeing this shortly after it was posted, she will be performing on May 10th at the LIC Bar You can also see all the info about the show here on her Facebook page.

Next, we had none other than Casey Dalyrmple, a former NYU track and field star who is proving that he multi talented by performing on guitar, mandolin and singing. Although I was not even aware of his act before that day, I was impressed by his sound and vocal abilities. And I couldn't help but notice his strong resemblance to the late great Jeff Buckley, who recently got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously.

Casey told me this was also the first time performing his new song "Ver Sacrum". I'm sure there will be plenty of more opportunities to see him perform in the coming months. Please be sure and visit his account on Instagram.

Another young Lady performing that night was Virginia Marcs. I had made her acquaintance over the summer at another event and was very impressed by her powerful singing voice. Marcs has been training her voice for years and it really shows in her performances. Marc has just released a new EP called "Reckoning" that is available at her live shows and on her website. See the link above.

Moving right along, we have the Man who mostly made me aware of the event. My friend Kevin Mayorga who was performing his solo project Olinguito. Normally, I would commiserate with those of you struggling to pronounce that but if you know the name of my band(which you should if you're reading this) it would certainly be the pot calling the kettle black. From his own original music to his cover songs, including a very good one of a song by Muse (go look and see which on his page). Either way, if you frequent open mics or other events you are most likely already familiar with Mayorga either as a performer or event organizer.

Last and certainly not least, we have a strong performance by Jeannie Skelly, who you usually find as the hostess for Astoria Music Collective events. But on that afternoon, Skelly decided to solely perform. It was a mix of cover tunes and originals including her unique signature number "My secret Boyfriends' a Matador". Which such a catchy name and equally intriguing lyrics with the steady rhythm it is certainly a hard piece to forget.

Well, I hope all of you enjoyed reading this. If you haven't heard of any of these artists before I just gave you plenty of reasons why you should check them out (and you may just see me performing at one as well). If you haven't been to an event held by the Astoria Music Collective, now is a great time to start. If you haven't even been to Queens yet, now you a few great reasons to visit. I believe they even have an open mic tonight.

Thanks again for reading this, until next time. Be Well, Nate xoxo
